Q: Do we need to return our marriage license to the County Recorder after the ceremony?
A: No. Couples are not responsible for returning the marriage license after the ceremony. Under California law, this responsibility belongs to the person who solemnizes the marriage.
California Family Code, Section 359(e), states: “The certificate of registry shall be returned by the person solemnizing the marriage to the county recorder of the county in which the license was issued within 10 days after the ceremony.”
At Today We Become One, your officiant ensures the marriage license is properly completed and returned to the appropriate County Recorder for official processing. This allows you to focus on celebrating, knowing the legal requirements are handled correctly.
-
Q: When and how do we receive our certified copies of the marriage license?
A: After the ceremony, your completed marriage license is returned to the County Recorder by the officiant for official recording. Once recorded, the County—not the officiant—issues certified copies.
Processing times vary by county, but most couples receive their certified copies by mail within 2–6 weeks. If copies were prepaid when the license was issued, they are mailed automatically. If not, you may request certified copies directly from the County Recorder once the marriage is recorded.
At Today We Become One, we’re happy to explain the process, timelines, and next steps so you know exactly what to expect after your ceremony.
