Looking For a Palm Springs Elopement? Here Are 10 Things You Should Know
So, you’re thinking about ditching the big ballroom, the 200-person guest list,
and the endless seating chart drama for something a bit more... cool?
If your heart is set on desert winds, mid-century modern vibes, and sunsets that look like
a watercolor painting, then a Palm Springs elopement is calling your name.

At Today We Become One, we live and breathe the magic of the Coachella Valley. We’ve seen hundreds of couples say "I do" against the backdrop of the San Jacinto Mountains, and let us tell you: there is nothing quite like it. But planning an elopement, while simpler than a traditional wedding, still requires some savvy strategy.
Before you pack your vintage sunglasses and head to the desert, here are 10 things you absolutely need to know to make your Palm Springs elopement as seamless as a poolside cocktail hour.
1. Weekdays Are Your Secret Weapon
Palm Springs is a weekend playground for travelers from Los Angeles, San Diego, and all over the world. From Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, the city is buzzing. If you’re looking for that quiet, "just us" feeling at a scenic overlook or a trendy boutique hotel, aim for a Tuesday or Wednesday.
Not only will you find more privacy at iconic spots, but you’ll also have an easier time booking your preferred vendors.
Plus, many local hotels and custom wedding services may offer mid-week rates that are much friendlier to your budget.

2. Timing Is Everything (Respect the Sun)
The desert sun is beautiful, but she is fierce. When planning your ceremony time, you have two golden windows: sunrise and sunset.
Sunrise elopements are for the adventurous souls. You’ll beat the heat, avoid the crowds at popular trails, and get that crisp, ethereal light.
Sunset elopements offer that iconic "Golden Hour" glow. The desert mountains turn shades of purple and pink that you truly have to see to believe.
Avoid high noon at all costs. Not only is the lighting harsh for photos, but the heat can be intense, especially between May and September. If you’re unsure about the best time for your specific location, our ceremony officiants are experts at timing your vows to catch the best light.
3. Know Your Privacy Options
Do you want a professional to lead the way, or are you looking for something completely private? In California, you have options. Many couples choose a traditional elopement with an officiant to guide the "I dos" and handle the legalities.
However, some couples prefer a "self-uniting" style ceremony for their private exchange of vows, followed by a formal signing with an authorized person later. Whether you want a full religious ceremony, a non-denominational service, or a quick "legal-only" signing at our wedding chapel, make sure you decide what kind of "privacy" matters most to you.
4. Permits Are Not Optional
One of the biggest mistakes couples make is assuming that because the desert is vast, they can just pull over and get married anywhere. If you are planning to elope on public land, such as Joshua Tree National Park, Indian Canyons, or BLM land, you will almost certainly need a Special Use Permit.
These permits are generally affordable (often between $150 and $300), but they take time to process. They also come with rules about how many guests you can have and what kind of decor is allowed (hint: usually no glitter or confetti!).
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the paperwork, don't hesitate to contact us today for guidance on local regulations.

5. The Marriage License Logistics
You can’t have the "happily ever after" without the "officially legal." In California, you must obtain a marriage license before your ceremony. But you have options!!
You can get this at any County Clerk’s office in the state: it doesn't have to be in Riverside County (where Palm Springs is), though that’s usually the most convenient.
Both of you must appear in person with valid government-issued photo IDs. Once issued, the license is valid for 90 days. We always recommend checking off this step at least a few days before your elopement so you aren’t rushing to a government office on your wedding day!
Can't do the Monday through Friday, 8 am-4:30 pm timeframe?
We offer a Complete Concierge Marriage License offering to get you legal on any day of the week.
6. Your Guest Count Dictates Everything
Even though it’s an elopement, you might still want your parents, siblings, or best friends there.
In the wedding world, "elopement" usually covers anything from 2 to 20 people.
However, your guest count will change which locations are available to you. Some "secret" spots only allow 4 people total, while others can accommodate a small group beautifully.
Decide on your "must-have" humans early on so you can scout the right location. If you’re looking for a stress-free package that handles everything for a small group, check out our destination packages.
7. Choosing the Right "Vibe" Venue
Palm Springs isn't just one big sandbox; it has several distinct personalities:
- The Lush Oasis: Places like Moorten Botanical Garden or the Indian Canyons offer greenery, palm trees, and cacti.
- The Mid-Century Dream: Renting a stylish Airbnb or booking a suite at the Ace Hotel or the Parker gives you that retro-chic background.
- The Wild Desert: Joshua Tree National Park (about 45 minutes away) offers those iconic boulders and twisted trees.
- The Elegant Chapel: If you want the desert feel but with air conditioning and classic charm, our local chapel services are a perfect fit.

8. Book Your Photographer Early
In a traditional wedding, the venue is often the first thing booked. In an elopement, it’s usually the photographer. Since your photos are the primary way you’ll share the day with friends and family who weren't there, you want someone who understands the unique lighting of the desert.
A great elopement photographer often acts as a mini-planner, helping you find those off-the-beaten-path locations and keeping an eye on the sunset clock.
We’ve worked with many talented pros and have several great vendors to recommend.
9. Personalize Your Ceremony
Just because you aren't having a traditional ceremony doesn't mean you should skip the meaningful bits. This is your chance to write vows that are 10 minutes long (or 10 seconds long!), incorporate a hand-fasting ritual, or include your dog as the ring bearer.
We love seeing couples get creative with their "His and Her" vow books and unique floral arrangements.
Remember, an elopement isn't a "lesser" wedding; it’s a more "concentrated" one.
Every detail should represent who you are as a couple.
10. Plan Your "Just Married" Celebration
The "I do" is just the beginning. One of the best parts of a Palm Springs elopement is the sheer variety of ways to celebrate afterward.
- For the Foodies: Book a private table at Le Vallauris or Workshop Kitchen + Bar.
- For the Adventurers: Take the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway to the top of the mountain for a celebratory hike.
- For the Relaxers: Head to a natural hot spring in Desert Hot Springs for a soak and a massage.
- For the Party Starters: Rent a vintage convertible and cruise down Palm Canyon Drive.
Whatever you choose, make sure you have a plan for that first meal as a married couple. It’s a moment you’ll remember forever. If you’re looking for ideas on how to round out your trip, keep an eye on our special offers for seasonal packages that include local perks.
